Role Overview

We are recruiting experienced Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedics and Emergency Care Practitioners (ECPs) to join our specialist Medevac Africa Rescue Team on a part-time / adhoc basis.

Medical Rescuers provide advanced prehospital emergency care during maritime, aviation and remote rescue operations, working alongside technical rescuers, pilots and rescue coordinators to safely assess, treat and evacuate patients in challenging operational environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver advanced prehospital emergency care within your scope of practice.
  • Assess, stabilise and manage critically ill and injured patients.
  • Assist with patient packaging, extrication and evacuation.
  • Participate in maritime, offshore, aviation and remote rescue missions.
  • Operate safely around helicopters, rescue vessels and specialist rescue equipment.
  • Complete patient care records and operational documentation.
  • Maintain operational readiness of medical equipment.
  • Participate in operational debriefings and quality improvement activities.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be registered with the HPCSA as an ALS Paramedic or Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP).
  • Be compliant with current HPCSA CPD requirements.
  • Hold valid individual medical malpractice insurance.
  • Hold a valid South African driver’s licence.
  • Be medically fit for operational duties.
  • Be a confident swimmer and comfortable operating in marine environments.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Possess basic computer literacy (Microsoft 365 advantageous).
  • Have reliable personal transport and be able to report to either our Pinelands or Cape Town International Airport operational bases within approximately 45 minutes of activation.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS)
  • Maritime or Offshore Medicine
  • Search and Rescue (SAR)
  • High Angle Rescue
  • Rope Rescue
  • Swift Water Rescue
  • Wilderness or Remote Medicine
  • Technical Rescue Operations
  • Aviation or Marine Operations

Operational Environment

Medical Rescuers may be deployed across a range of operational environments, including:

  • Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR)
  • Offshore Medical Evacuations
  • Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS)
  • Remote and Wilderness Rescue
  • Industrial and Remote Site Emergency Response
  • Aviation and Marine Rescue Operations

Work Arrangement

  • Part-time / adhoc deployments based on operational requirements.
  • Participation in an operational standby roster.
  • Must be available to deploy on multi-day missions when required.
  • Must be willing to work both day and night operations.
  • Mandatory attendance at training every second week, incorporating both physical fitness and practical rescue exercises.
  • Successful applicants will be required to complete ongoing operational competency assessments.
